CaperCon convention attendees wait to meet actor Scott McNeil

You’ll find superheroes, villains, and anime characters at CaperCon. Or at least fans dressed up as their favorite characters from various games and shows! During the three-day convention in 2018, CaperCon brought together nearly 1,000 people while organized completely by volunteers. This annual pop culture event in Cape Breton is like a smaller, local version of ComiCon, the enormous multi-genre entertainment convention. Fans play games, attend panels, meet guest stars from shows, dress up as favorite characters and showcase artistic tributes…

Radical changes in the European political and social climates have inspired the festival association, Yourope, to Take a Stand. The political divisiveness of Brexit and the recent tragedy at the Manchester stop on Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman” tour are two recent reminders of why Take a Stand is a relevant cause. A festival of any variety draws a diverse crowd of attendees who come from every corner of the world to celebrate music, food, art, and movies. It feels that…

Once again, Marcato headquarters is buried in a solid 3 feet of snow, but down in the Southern Hemisphere, it is an enviably different story. Summer is in full swing and today marks the start of New Zealand’s longest running music festival and the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Christian festival, Parachute Festival. Pulling together an impressive crowd of 25,000+ people every year, Parachute continues to build on its legacy, first started in 1991, by showcasing some of biggest names in contemporary…

On October 22nd I checked into the Atlantica Hotel in Halifax, N.S., where the concierge politely directed me towards my 8th-level room and told me where I could register for this year’s Halifax Pop Explosion.  Looking around the lounge, I spotted at least 5 different wicked recreations of my dad’s old bleached denim jacket, a collection of vintage video game consoles set up and ready to rock on an 80” LCD screen, a group of young entrepreneurs all practicing their…

I’m sitting at the bar in Sydney’s Cape Breton Fudge Company, sipping a delicious dark roast caramel coffee and soaking up the anticipation for next week’s 2013 Nova Scotia Music Week.  The CB Fudge Co. is one of the eight amazing venues Sydney has offered up for us to enjoy some fantastic music listening experiences. Serge Samson, Event Manager with Music Nova Scotia, explains, “When NSWM comes to town, we try to tap into the hosting city’s already vibrant, music-loving…

It’s Sunday morning and I have a hangover.  This time it’s not from over consumption (that was yesterday), but rather the comedown from extreme elation.  I had the pleasure of joining the TD Halifax Jazzfest at the most urban of venues, The Marquee Ballroom, for a summer’s evening of mixing, emceeing, freestyle and, above all, presence! We arrived to a programmed assault by resident mixer Fresh Kils and his counterpart, Uncle Fester (whose collaboration form The Extremities), which was an…

We’re pretty lucky here at Marcato!  Part of being in the festival business is living those festivals.  I had that opportunity this past weekend by attending the TD Halifax Jazz Festival.  I’ve always been a huge fan of the Halifax Jazzfest — having attended Saint Mary’s University, I frequented the free shows when I was a brokeass student. Once again, the organizers of the TD Jazzfest assembled a terrific lineup of artists, ranging from electroaboriginal beat-down; to the mellow reggae…

This year we were so excited that the ECMA’s were held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This made our usual trek to the event a quick one. All we had to do was scoot across the causeway for some great music, food and networking! As usual East Coast Music Week was no disappointment. We were able to meet some amazing new people, hang with some old friends (from near and far) and check out some amazing bands. This year was Marcato’s first…
